A DARING thief took advantage of the situation at the National Heroes’ Acre in Harare where thousands of people were gathered for the burial of late Vice-President John Nkomo on Monday and allegedly stole a mourner’s car before he was arrested a few hours later.

The suspect, George Matongo (26), yesterday appeared in court charged with a motor vehicle theft. The State alleged that Matongo used an unknown object to unlock Wonder Dzuda’s Nissan Hardbody truck at the national shrine and drove off unnoticed.
He allegedly used a screw driver to start the engine.
Dzuda later realised the theft and made a report at Warren Park Police Station.
“At about 1600 hours, the accused was spotted driving the vehicle suspiciously by police officers who were on patrol and they challenged him to produce his driver’s licence and he failed, leading to his arrest,” reads the State outline. Police searched the vehicle and discovered Dzuda’s identification documents.

Matongo was remanded in custody to February 13.
