THE Environment Management Agency (EMA) has pressed charges against Norton Town Council for disposal of raw sewage in Darwendale Dam, leading to pollution of water.

REPORT BY MARGARET CHIRAIRO OWN CORRESPONDENT

Prosecuting at the magistrates’ court in Norton early this week, Solomon Kanyoka said EMA conducted several inspections through their inspector Pedzisai Simbiso who proved the allegation. The complainant discovered that Norton Town Council’s sewage treatment plant is not functional to capacity hence untreated sewage is flowing into Dawendale from non-functional pump house,” Kanyoka said.

The town council is being charged for contravening Section 57 of the Environmental Management Act Chapter 20:22 as read with section 227(3) of the criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23-(water pollution). The case has been postponed to tomorrow for sentencing by magistrate Never Diza after council admitted to wrongdoing.
