A 63-YEAR-OLD Binga man, who was fishing with his son at Masumu River, disappeared when their canoe was attacked by a crocodile last week.

Report by Pamela Mhlanga

Matabeleland North Provincial Spokesperson Billie Dube said the incident happened when Makhiwa Kabichi Mudenda and his son Manager were fishing near Kalulwe fishing camp.

“Makhiwa Kabichi Mudenda (63) was fishing with his son Manager Mudenda (26) and both were in a wooden canoe when crocodiles attacked them,” he said.

Dube said when the two fell from the canoe, Manager managed to escape by swimming back to the shore leaving Makhiwa behind.

“The two fell from the canoe into the water and were attacked by crocodiles. Manager escaped from the crocodile’s grip and he swam to the shore,” he said.

The matter was reported the following day to Binga police who attended the scene, but Makhiwa’s body was not found.

Dube said the police were still carrying out investigations and they suspected that Makhiwa might have been devoured by the reptiles.
