Midlands provincial police said in a statement that they handled 394 rape cases compared to 350 during the same period last year, representing an increase of 13%.

The police said it was disturbing that most of the rape cases were perpetrated by relatives, neighbours, teachers and heads of schools. “We have recorded an increase in rape cases in the province.

Rape against juveniles rose from 257 to 269 and against adults from 93 to 125. Close relatives, neighbours, teachers and heads of schools are among the top culprits and this is quite disturbing,” the police said.

Police said they had rolled out campaigns in schools as a way to curb the growing incidents of rape cases in institutions of learning. The police also advised parents and guardians not to leave their children with people they do not trust.
