EX-CONVICTS Onias Mawire has teamed up with his three friends to release two hip-hop tracks called Kuchema Kwemabhanditi and Vanavangu Chigumbura.
BY OWN CORRESPONDENT The songs are the first project to be released at Mawire’s recently set-up recording studio called Mighty Exploits Studios in Arcadia.
Mawire, who served a seven-year sentence for armed robbery and carjacking, set up the studio to assist prison returnees to record music.
Speaking to NewsDay, Mawire said the tracks they had released signified their seriousness about music and the recording trade.
The song Kuchema Kwemabhanditi, which tells the convicts’ predicaments, features Masimba Bvumbe who is also an ex-convict.
Through the song, the musicians are explaining that when one is incarcerated, that’s when they come to realise their mistakes in life and would be willing to make changes.

Track Vanavangu Chigumbura features Mawire and Farai Busumani and is an appeal for family members of the convicts to take care of their children, saying the latter should not be punished or suffer for the incarcerated father or mother.
The now-repented Mawire said being a victim of rejection from recording studios as he tried to launch his music career soon after his release from Chikurubi Maximum Prison led him to set up his own studio.
The 36-year-old Mawire said Mighty Exploits Studios was going to be a relief to fellow ex-convicts as they are free to come for recording.
