THE Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) requires an initial $60 million in order to successfully meet the July 2015 digital migration deadline, an official has said.

In a statement, chairman of the ZBC board committee on digitisation Gelfand Kausiyo said the broadcaster would enter the digital migration programme with one national television channel.

But he said the end of that process would come out with many television channels for the national public broadcaster.

These would include dedicated channels to cater for news, sport, documentaries, gospel, music, kids and other sections.

“Our role as the ZBC  in this process of digital migration is that of digital content and digital platform development. We have to digitalise our environment to take it from an analogue mode into a digital one,” Kausiyo said.

“We have to create a server-based broadcast environment for signal origination from our studios across the country. We have to create a massive digital library in which all our content dating back a significant number of years back, shall reside.”

ZBC, which is technically insolvent and saddled with debts running into millions of dollars, is expecting to get funding for the digital migration programme from the cash strapped government.
