THE three police officers who allegedly stole 33 216 assorted rounds of ammunition from a police armoury and later sold them to a Chinese national were yesterday granted $100 bail each when they appeared before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe.

Mahwe also ordered former Detective Assistant Inspector Ananias Machingura (40), Detective Constable Vengesai Hakunandaba (47) and Assistant Inspector Brian Marufu (39) to tender their passports with the clerk of court and to reside at their given addresses until finalisation of the matter.
The court further remanded them to August 25.
In granting bail to the three, Mahwe said the State, represented by Sharon Mashavira, was “relying on evidence from witnesses who are accomplices in the offence” and added that granting the accused trio bail was not prejudicial to the State case.
The three, represented by Harare lawyer Tina Kadhau, are facing charges of stealing the ammunition from the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s national armoury and selling the alleged loot to Woncai Huo (51).

The Chinese national, who is also facing charges of contravening various sections of the Firearms Act, the Gold Trade Act and the Parks and Wildlife Act, is currently out of custody on $2 000 bail.
