HIGH Court judge Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo yesterday dismissed a bail application filed by a 28-year-old Harare man who allegedly raped his six-year-old niece two months ago and attempted to buy her silence with a plate of rice.

In dismissing the application, Justice Matanda-Moyo noted that trial of the matter had already commenced at the magistrates’ court.
The suspect, who stays in Hopley Zone 6, in Waterfalls, is alleged to taken advantage of the absence of the minor girl’s absence and lured her to his house. Oblivious of the dangers that lay ahead, the girl allegedly complied.
Upon arrival at suspect’s house, he allegedly lured into his bedroom where he sexually molested her once and gave her rice to eat after which he ordered her to keep the incident a secret.
However, the suspect’s luck ran out after the girl’s grandmother observed that the minor’s genitals were discharging some foreign substances and was experiencing difficulties in walking.

The State further alleges the girl’s grandmother also observed that the girl’s pants had been soiled with some unusual fluids, prompting her to quiz the minor over her findings.
The girl later spilled the beans and implicated her uncle.
The matter was then reported to police, leading to the suspect’s arrest on a rape charge.
