ZIMBABWEAN-BASED Zambians will on August 30 celebrate their country’s 50th independence anniversary with a family fun day at Barclays Sports Club in Harare. The organising committee led by Beatrice Duttonlast week urged Zambians to come in their dozens.

Dutton said traditional food like chikanda (African polony), ifisashi (vegetables in peanut butter) and many other Zambian dishes would be on sale.
“The theme for the golden jubilee celebrations is: Commemorating God’s favour of Zambia’s 50 years of independence for continued peace, unity, democracy, patriotism and prosperity,” she said.
“We hope to rope in people like the Rusike Brothers and other Zimbabweans that lived in Zambia to donate their music and entertain people on the day,” Dutton said.
Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, Zambia has a common history with Zimbabwe (then called Southern Rhodesia) as they were part of an economic federation under British control that also included Malawi, formerly known as Nyasaland.

The federation officially ended on December 31 1963 with Zambia gaining independence on October 24 1964.
Official celebrations in Zimbabwe will be held on October 25 at a venue yet to be announced.
“We welcome all people that lived in Zambia to come and join us at the Family Fun Day,” Dutton said.
