MUTARE mayor Tatenda Nhamarare and two other MDC-T councillors were yesterday barred from attending the opposition’s consultative meeting in the city with party activists saying they ceased to be members after they allegedly supped with the ruling Zanu PF councillors during last year’s mayoral elections.

MDC-T activists blocked the entrance at Mutare Hall and ordered Nhamarare and councillors Farai Bhiza and Richard Mupfura to leave the venue, saying they were no longer party members, although the trio insisted that they were paid-up members.
The party activists also defied MDC-T deputy national chairman Morgan Komichi’s advice to allow the three to attend the closed-door meeting.
The three were booted out of the MDC-T early this year
alongside councillor Pamela Mutare for allegedly conniving with Zanu PF councillors to vote Nhamarare as mayor ahead of the opposition party’s preferred candidate, Thomas Nyamupangedengu.

The party also accused them of voting Zanu PF councillor Collen Mukwada as deputy mayor, but the trio denied the charge and appealed against their expulsion. Nhamarare told NewsDay that he was being victimised by party officials pursuing “personal vendettas”.
“They don’t have that right to shut me out of the meeting. By virtue of the appeal that we made we are still party members. They used this opportunity to settle personal vendettas with me,” Nhamarare said.
