A 48–YEAR–OLD lecturer in the Department of Technical Education at the University of Zimbabwe, Henry Matienga, was yesterday remanded to September 17 when he appeared before a Harare magistrate facing charges of breaching the Firearms Act.

Matienga was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Tendai Mahwe and was remanded out of custody on $50 bail. The lecturer, who resides in Mt Pleasant, Harare, is accused of contravening the firearms law after allegedly pointing gun at his landlord Ian Mazorodze of Number 3 Moss Close in Mt Pleasant during a misunderstanding over rentals.
The court heard that on September 2 this year at around 1830hrs, Mazorodze went to the accused person’s cottage and demanded that he should settle his rentals for the month.
It is alleged that the two had a heated argument over the amount of money that Matienga owed the landlord.
In the ensuing fracas, the court heard, Matienga dashed into his room and returned holding a 12-bore shotgun, threatening to shoot Mazorodze.

Fearing for his life, the complainant is said to have run back into his house for cover and subsequently informed his brother about the encounter.
The two brothers dashed off to Marlborough Police Station where they reported the matter.
Matienga was subsequently arrested and a firearm was retrieved by the police pending finalisation of the case.
