No one will ever know why Andrew Chimboza allegedly ate a man’s heart.

The man dubbed the Cannibal Killer pleaded guilty to murder in the Cape Town High Court yesterday.

Judge Ashley Binns-Ward asked if the prosecution accepted Chimboza’s plea and the fact that he did not mention removing the heart of his love rival, Mbuyiselo Manona.

Prosecutor Jacqueline Sibiya said this did not weaken the State’s case as Chimboza had admitted to killing Manona.

But Manona’s sister Thembela said: “I am angry that he is denying that he removed the heart while my brother was still alive.”

In a four-page plea read out in court yesterday, Chimboza admitted that he stabbed Manona, 62, to death in a fit of rage at the Gugulethu home of his girlfriend, Nomonde Soloshe-Tshabalala, in June.

Police said they “found the suspect eating the heart of a human with a knife and fork”.

Chimboza said he had gone to repair windows at Soloshe-Tshabalala’s home on June 10 when a jealous Manona attacked him.

“The deceased knocked me in the face and accused me of sleeping with his woman. I realised that he wanted to stab me.”

Chimboza said he then stabbed Manona.

Judge Binns-Ward found Chimboza guilty. The doctor who conducted the post-mortem on Manona will testify in aggravation of sentence today.
