A serious health hazard is looming in Highfield 1 where residents are being forced to illegally dump garbage due to failure by the Harare City Council to collect refuse.

Litter has become a common site in most residential areas with city fathers appearing clueless on how to deal with the problem.

A survey by NewsDay, revealed that most open spaces in Highfield have been turned into dumping sites with residents blaming the local authority for failing to collect garbage.

“It takes more than a week before the council collects garbage and as a result we are forced to dump it by the roadside,” said one resident Andrew Tiripo. Council blames lack of refuse trucks for the failure to collect garbage on a regular basis.

However, recently council reportedly acquired state of the art Ford off-road vehicles for its traffic department. The vehicles can be seen in the CBD engaged in running battles with commuter omnibus drivers.
