Redcliff Mayor Freddy Kapuya, who has been on the forefront of the eviction of Torwood residents over non-payment of rentals, is facing his own fair share of debt problems.

Kapuya is now facing possible court action over a debt he owes a security company for services rendered at his Redcliff home since March.

SAWA Security Company through its lawyers Mutatu and Partners, is accusing Kapuya of failing or neglecting to pay $1 570 for security services offered for the Redcliff Mayor in his personal capacity.

“We have instructions that as at 31 July you owe our client the sum of $1 570 for security services at your specific instance and request. You failed, neglected or refused to pay for the security services rendered since March 2015 to date,”read part of the letter dated August 25.

Kapuya, through a private school which he owns, also owes SAWA Security another $6 950 and is also being dragged to court for the debt.

SAWA Security has also issued a separate letter to Kapuya and copied it to the school headmaster demanding that payment be made.

Lawyer Valentine Mutatu, who is acting for SAWA Security, said he had already commenced court action against the Mayor after he failed to respond to the letters of demand.

In 2013 Kapuya had his office furniture and other movable property auctioned after he failed to settle a debt with a hardware firm which had supplied him with ceramic floor tiles.

The Redcliff Mayor has defied directives from the Ministry of Local Government stopping councils from evicting tenants or cutting water supplies to defaulting resident.

“Remember we borrowed half a million dollars from the same ministry to upgrade those substandard houses on the understanding that we would pay back the money after selling the homes. So giving title to tenants will leave us in a financial hole,” he said in defiance of the directives.
