By NKOSENTSHA KHUMALO GOVERNMENT has said over 2 000 people in Bulawayo have applied for e-passports since the facility was launched in the city a few weeks ago.
Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe told Southern Eye said over 2 000 e-passports were being processed in Bulawayo.
Recently, government announced that the e-passport application process would be decentralised to the country’s 10 provinces. Previously, people had to travel to Harare to apply for the documents.
The facility was launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on December 14 last year after government entered into a partnership with a Luthanian company, Garsu Pasaulis, on a build, own, operate and transfer basis to produce e-passports that meet international standards.
The passport costs US$120, including a US$20 application fee. E-passports can be produced within seven days.
“About 2000 applications have been processed,” Kazembe said.

“E-passport seekers are required to produce their expired passports while old passports will be still in use. Those submitting forms will be required to re-register for the e-passports.”
