A SUSPECTED drug dealer, who police were seeking after his wife’s arrest for dealing in dangerous drugs, has been arrested.

He appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Nomore Chabata (47) of Marimba was remanded in custody pending bail ruling tomorrow.

Chabata faces charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs, contravening section 29 of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act, and possession of explosives without a permit.

A crack team led by Detective Assistant Inspector Simbi Oadzakashamba, head of the Anti-Drugs Trafficking National Crack Unit, arrested him.

It is alleged that on May 8, police received information that the owner and occupants of a house in Marimba, Harare, were involved in unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs.

Acting on the tip-off, police raided and searched the house, leading to the arrest of Chabata’s wife, Catherine Chembe, who faces similar charges at the Harare Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that during questioning, Chembe implicated Chabata as her accomplice in drug dealing and as co-owner of the property.

Chembe then allegedly led police to the main house, where 10kg of loose dagga was recovered from an unlocked guest room.

She is also alleged to have led police to the master bedroom, where 100x100ml bottles of Benylin with codeine were recovered.

Police say Chembe further led the officers to a cottage on the same premises, where Loveness Phiri was found in a storeroom allegedly packaging dagga into sachets of various sizes.

Chembe and Phiri allegedly led police to the recovery of 34kg of loose dagga and 26kg of dagga seeds and plant material from the storeroom.

Police also recovered 194 bottles of Benylin, 50 bottles of BronCleer, 323 bottles of Astra pain, 1 300 packaging plastics, an electric sealer, a green digital scale and counter books used for recording transactions involving dangerous drugs, explosives, and fuse detonators.

Police launched a manhunt for Chabata, leading to his arrest.
