CHERUTOMBO High School’s sports teams recently got a major boost after a group of former students donated new sports gear.
The former students at one of Marondera’s biggest school located in Cherutombo high-density suburb, under the tag Class of 99, handed over the donation that will benefit sports teams from various disciplines.
Addressing the school staff and learners at the school’s hall, the alumni’s representative, Luckmore Lapkin, said the donation will go a long way in instilling confidence in learners.
“Sport is more than a game. It teaches discipline, team work, resilience and pride,” he said.
“By providing these uniforms, we want to ensure that the soccer and netball teams can represent Cherutombo High School with unity both on the field and in competition across Marondera and beyond.
“These uniforms may see simple, but they carry a message, that your community believes in you and that your efforts on the field matters.”

The alumni comprised students who learned at the Municipality of Marondera-owned learning institution from 1996 to 1999.
In his acceptance speech, Cherutombo High acting school head, one M Deredzai, thanked the former students for their generosity.
“Your kind gesture shows a strong commitment to the growth of sport and the all-round development of our learners,” Deredzai said.
“The kits will greatly improve participation in sporting activities, encourage discipline and team work, and build a greater sense of pride among our students.
“We are encouraged by your continued support for Cherutombo High School, long after you left.
“Your contribution stands as an inspiration to current learners and a reminder of the lasting bond between former students.”
The former students donated a full set each for both junior and senior soccer and netball teams.
The team also donated soccer balls.
Lapkin was accompanied by Angeline Matandalizwe, Linda Matiyenga, Wiseman Nzuma, Godknows Chaendera and Stella Makonese, among others.
After leaving Cherutimbo High School, the former students regrouped and formed a WhatsApp group in 2015 before sourcing funds to buy sports kit.
