HARARE, May 14 (NewsDay Live) - EcoCash has introduced a “Request Payment” feature on its Super App, allowing users to request money directly from other wallet holders in a move that mirrors the simplicity of the once-popular “call me back” airtime prompt.

The feature enables users to send digital payment requests by entering the recipient’s phone number, the amount required and an optional note explaining the purpose of the request.

Recipients receive an instant push notification showing the requester’s name, amount requested and reference message. Payments can then be approved using a PIN or biometric authentication, with funds transferred immediately if sufficient wallet balances are available.

If a request is declined or ignored, both parties receive status updates through the app.

The feature is aimed at simplifying routine peer-to-peer transactions, including borrowing transport money, collecting group contributions or following up unpaid debts.

Traditionally, such transactions required multiple calls, reminders or manual wallet transfers. The new feature consolidates the process into a single in-app interaction.

The launch reflects a broader fintech trend toward “social finance”, where payments are increasingly embedded within communication and social interactions rather than treated as separate financial processes.

EcoCash has in recent months expanded its Super App ecosystem beyond basic mobile money transfers, adding features designed to integrate payments, messaging and shared financial activity within one platform.

The Request Payment function also complements the app’s recently introduced bill-splitting tool, further positioning the platform as a socially integrated digital payments service.
