HARARE, Apr. 15 (NewsDay Live) -The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is investigating social media activist Majaira Jairosi for allegedly drafting and circulating fake police statements.
The ZRP said the misleading documents were designed to deceive the public into believing they were genuine statements from the office of police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“The ZRP is now instituting formal investigations into the activities of a social media activist, Majaira Jairosi for drafting and circulating purported police statements on social media,”
“The statements in question are presented in a manner that may mislead the public into believing they are official communications from the ZRP. This has the potential to cause unnecessary alarm, confusion and undermine public confidence in official police channels,” the police said.
The latest fake statement, dated 14 April 2026, falsely claimed that police were unable to act against a group referred to as the “Presidential Mafia” and included politically sensitive allegations involving unnamed senior leaders and prominent individuals.
The ZRP says it has engaged officials at social media platform X to help unmask the originator of the statements.

“In response, the ZRP has lodged a formal complaint with X, seeking the platform’s intervention in addressing the dissemination of misleading content and to ensure compliance with its policies on misinformation and impersonation,” police said, adding that appropriate action would be taken against the alleged malcontents.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the spread of fabricated government documents on social media and their potential impact on public trust and national discourse.
