ON July 13, 2024, NewsDay published a story titled: ED has no intention of stepping down.
The story was based on comments made by panellists, who were part of a debate on X Spaces about President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent announcement that he will step down when his term of office ends in 2028.
We, as a newspaper, have no reason to believe that the President will not comply with constitutional provisions.
As captured in the story, it was the panellists’ view that the President will not retire as promised.
Following consultations, we acknowledge that our headline suggests that the President has intentions to violate the Constitution, which stipulates that presidential terms are limited to two.
We, therefore, retract the statement and apologise unreservedly to President Mnangagwa for any inconvenience caused by the publication.
