MATABELELAND South Provincial Miners Federation chairperson Philimon Mokuele has urged miners to plough back into communities they operate in, targeting the elderly and less-privileged.
Mokuele,-who is also the director for Ditlou Mining Investments, said miners should always be guided by a document under the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) on corporate social responsibility.
“There is a document that we sign under the Ema Act, which speaks to issues of corporate social responsibility. The document is often overlooked,” Mokuele said while donating food hampers at Gwanda Old People’s Home last week.
“We have been challenging miners to consider donating to the elderly and the less-privileged in their communities. As small-scale miners, we have taken it upon ourselves to take the lead.”
Gwanda mayor Njabulo Siziba said: “This is very important. I am happy because other companies have admitted that it has been an oversight, but most of them were supposed to be here and see smiles on their faces which is a blessing to God.”
Also present during the handover ceremony was Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution secretary Lathiso-Dlamini-Masuku and representatives of the Kip Keino Children’s Home who also received donations.
