Chicken Inn eye top spot

The resurgent GameCocks had an indifferent set of results in their first five games in which they managed one win, three draws and lost one, but have collected maximum points in their last two games. Currently they are in fourth position on the log-table with 12 points, just two behind leaders Highlanders.

REVITALISED Chicken Inn, hosting Hwange in one of nine Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches between today and tomorrow, return to their home comfort at Luveve Stadium as they eye top spot after their big win over Highlanders over the weekend.

The resurgent GameCocks had an indifferent set of results in their first five games in which they managed one win, three draws and lost one, but have collected maximum points in their last two games. Currently they are in fourth position on the log-table with 12 points, just two behind leaders Highlanders.

If all goes well for them, they could rule the roost after the midweek games, depending on results from other venues.

Chicken Inn dispatched Green Fuel 2-0 a fortnight ago, their first home victory, with goals from Brighton Makopa and the ever-green Michael Charamba.

Charamba was on target again when they beat Highlanders at Emagumeni on Sunday with the other goal from Brian Muza, the dreadlocked winger now on three goals, two behind Bosso’s Lynoth Chikuhwa, who leads the league’s scorers’ chart.

For Chicken Inn’s opponents this afternoon, it has been bad news thus far this term as they have struggled with only one win in seven games in which they beat Yadah at home and have two draws and four defeats as they sit at the bottom on the log table with a measly five points from a possible 21.

Leading the pack, but smarting from the Chicken Inn defeat, Highlanders with 14 points, are away to Herentals at Rufaro Stadium today, while second-placed Simba Bhora (13 points) are away once more at Sakubva Stadium to take on Bikita Minerals

The Tonderai Ndiraya-coached Simba Bhora lost 0-1 to Bulawayo Chiefs at Luveve on Sunday.

On the third spot are former four-time champions FC Platinum (12 points) as they brace for ZPC Kariba at Mandava after playing consecutive draws to debutants Bikita Minerals and Arenel Movers.

The Zvishavane-based side has an abandoned game to be decided in the boardroom after their game against Caps United at Mandava was stopped in the second half over crowd trouble.

They were leading 1-0.

Bulawayo Chiefs have so far acquitted themselves well in the first seven games in which they have won three times, played two draws and lost twice, sitting on position five on the table with 11 points.

Manica Diamonds are also on the rise just a point below Chiefs, and after their victory over Caps United over the weekend, they travel to Bulawayo to face stubborn Arenel Movers at Luveve tomorrow, while Dynamos — sitting on nine points, are away to Chegutu Pirates at Baobab.
