The all-new Mitsubishi Destinator has arrived in Zimbabwe, entering one of the most competitive corners of the vehicle market with a strong blend of practicality, performance and value. At a time when buyers are demanding more equipment, more space and better pricing, Mitsubishi’s latest seven-seat SUV appears to have judged the market perfectly.
Distributed locally by Zimoco, Mitsubishi’s long-standing official representative in Zimbabwe, the Destinator opens at US$ 40 800 for the GLS model, while the higher-spec Exceed comes in at US$46 000. Those prices position it as an appealing option for families who want modern SUV comfort and versatility without straying too far beyond the US$40 000 mark.
If the Destinator’s arrival proves anything, it is that established manufacturers are now responding decisively to the rise of competitively priced new entrants, particularly Chinese brands that have redefined expectations around affordability and specification. Buyers are no longer satisfied with paying more for less. They want value, and they want it without compromise.
Mitsubishi appears to have taken that lesson seriously. The Destinator offers seven-seat practicality, turbo-charged performance and a generous list of features at a price that would once have seemed highly ambitious for a traditional manufacturer. In doing so, it places itself firmly in the value-driven sweet spot now shaping SUV buying decisions.

Both models are powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 120kW and 250Nm, paired with a six-step CVT transmission driving the front wheels. It is a simple formula, but an effective one. Instead of overwhelming buyers with multiple engines and drivetrain options, Mitsubishi has opted for clarity. Customers need to only decide how much equipment they want.
Built in Indonesia, the Destinator shares its underlying architecture with the Outlander Sport, but it is notably larger. At approximately 4 680mm in length, it stretches around 290mm beyond its smaller sibling, creating room for a third row of seats and improving overall family usability.
Family-focused practicality
The main attraction here is obvious: seven-seat capacity. As with most compact SUVs featuring three rows, the rearmost seats are best suited to children or shorter trips rather than full-time adult use. Even so, the extra seating flexibility will be welcomed by growing families, school-run parents and anyone who occasionally needs to carry more than five occupants.
Access to the third row is helped by middle seats that tumble forward with relative ease, a small but essential convenience in day-to-day use. For urban errands, weekend outings and family travel, that added versatility strengthens the Destinator’s appeal.
Inside, the cabin closely resembles that of the Outlander Sport, with a clean layout and a solid sense of build quality. Mitsubishi has long traded on durability, and that reputation remains evident here. The interior feels robust and sensibly assembled, with fit and finish that should reassure buyers looking for long-term dependability. Piano black trim is used generously, but the overall result remains modern and cohesive.
Well equipped from the start
Even in GLS form, the Destinator comes with a healthy list of standard equipment. Highlights include an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, rear-view camera, fabric seats, folding tables for middle-row passengers, manual climate control, push-button start and hands-free voice control.
Safety has not been overlooked either. Six airbags, rear parking sensors, Hill Start Assist and Active Yaw Control are all included as standard, giving the entry-level model real substance.
Step up to the Exceed derivative and the specification level rises significantly. Buyers gain a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, Yamaha Premium sound, a hands-free powered tailgate, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and synthetic leather seats with power adjustment for the driver.
The flagship also benefits from a more comprehensive safety suite, adding Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A Multi Around View Monitor and multi-colour ambient lighting further enhance the upmarket feel.
On the outside, both variants run on 18-inch alloy wheels, though the Exceed stands apart with machined-finish alloys, gloss black grille details and mid-grey bumper accents that lend it a more premium road presence.
Comfortable, capable on the road
Out on the road, the Destinator proves it is not merely a strong-value offering. Ride comfort is one of its key strengths, with the suspension absorbing imperfections well and the cabin remaining reasonably insulated from wind and road noise.
The front-wheel-drive chassis delivers predictable and reassuring handling. Push harder and mild understeer appears, as expected, but in normal family driving conditions the vehicle feels composed and confidence-inspiring.
The 1.5-litre turbo engine provides enough punch for daily use and open-road overtaking, with the 250Nm torque figure helping it feel responsive where it matters most.
The CVT transmission is also among the better-calibrated examples in this class, avoiding much of the droning behaviour that once gave such gearboxes a poor reputation. Mitsubishi has also included five drive modes — Normal, Wet, Gravel, Mud and Tarmac — adding extra versatility for different road surfaces and conditions.
The Mitsubishi Destinator arrives with all the right credentials. It offers space, practicality, modern features and credible performance at pricing that makes it highly relevant in today’s market. For families looking for a seven-seat SUV from an established brand without venturing deep into premium territory, it deserves serious attention.
In a market increasingly shaped by value and equipment, Mitsubishi has made a timely and intelligent move. The Destinator looks ready to compete.
