The 2026 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon (EVFM) is shaping up to be the biggest edition in the event’s history, after major race categories sold out nearly two months before race day, indicating the growing global appeal of Zimbabwe’s premier marathon.

Scheduled for July 5 in Victoria Falls, the marathon continues to cement its status as one of Africa’s leading destination sporting events, attracting runners, health and fitness enthusiasts, along with adventure seekers from around the world.

Organisers are yet to establish this year’s international participants, but last year’s event drew more than 5 000 participants from 46 countries, transforming the resort town into a lively and vibrant hub of sport, tourism and international cultural exchange.

According to the organizers, the early sell-out – two months ahead of the marathon –reflects the marathon’s rising stature on the international running calendar as well as the unique experience offered by the scenic Victoria Falls destination, home to one of the seventh natural wonder of the world.

“The fact that our major race categories sold out nearly two months before race day is an extraordinary statement about where this event now stands globally,” said race director Brent Williamson.

“When we first launched the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, selling out was an aspiration. But today it has become the norm, with registrations closing earlier each year as runners from around the world plan their travel well in advance, to secure their place.”

Williamson noted that the marathon’s growing popularity is being driven by a powerful combination of world-class racing, breathtaking scenery and the unique atmosphere of Victoria Falls.

“What makes this event special is that runners are not simply entering a race – they are booking an experience,” he said.

“The combination of a world-class route, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as the backdrop, and the warmth of Victoria Falls has created something truly unique.”

Participants run across the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge and through scenic routes that pass through areas surrounding the national park, offering runners an immersive experience rarely found on the global marathon circuit.

The limited number of entries has also contributed to the marathon’s exclusivity and special appeal.

“The relatively smaller field size creates a less crowded and more immersive race experience. Considering parts of the route run through a national park, runners also enjoy the rare thrill of potentially encountering wildlife along the course,” said Williamson.

The growth trajectory of the marathon over the years has been significant.

The event started in 2006 with fewer than 300 participants. By 2017, participation had risen to over 2 500 runners. In 2022, the marathon attracted more than 3 800 runners before surpassing the 5 000 mark last year (2025) with participants travelling from 46 countries.

Sponsored by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the marathon has evolved into more than just a sporting competition, becoming a major tourism and economic platform for Zimbabwe.
