Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar officially launched the franchise’s 2026 campaign at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, confirming the arrival of Zimbabwe speedster Blessing Muzarabani as a blessing in disguise following a period of significant squad upheaval.

The tall pacer joins the two-time champions as a late replacement for Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, who was released from his  contract following a BCCI directive. The decision to axe Rahman, the only Bangladeshi player in the league, came amid a diplomatic crisis between New Delhi and Dhaka that has already led to a broadcast ban of the IPL in Bangladesh and the national team's withdrawal from the T20 World Cup.

The 6-foot-8-inch Muzarabani arrives at KKR on a Rs 75 lakh deal (about US$80 000), a move that simultaneously resolves KKR’s search for an overseas spearhead and nets the player a salary increase of over 100% after he opted out of his Pakistan Super League (PSL) commitments.

Addressing the squad during their first training session, Nayar used the Zimbabwean’s arrival to lift the mood of a side looking to move past last season’s eighth-place finish. "Blessing, you are a blessing in disguise for us," Nayar said during his opening pep-talk. "I know so far we’ve sort of folded you in the bus, but it’s great to have you, the tallest member ever to be part of this KKR team. So welcome, I hope you have a great time with us and you enjoy the company of our boys."

With a revamped support staff featuring assistant coach Shane Watson, bowling coach Tim Southee, and mentor Dwayne Bravo, Nayar made it clear that the next 10 days of preparation would focus on psychological readiness rather than technical adjustments.

"We have had a lot of discussions, we have spoken a lot. For me, what happens here is how we tune what’s between our ears,"Nayar told the gathered players. "The skill is there, that’s not going to change in the next 10 days. But what changes is our mentality."

The 42-year-old coach, who recently led the UP Warriorz in the WPL, is under pressure to deliver immediate results after KKR parted ways with title-winning coach Chandrakant Pandit. For Nayar, the focus is singular: adding a fourth star to the KKR jersey.

"Every moment that we spend on this ground, every moment we spend with each other... there’s one goal. We have to do one thing, we have to win, we have to get that fourth star,"** he added. **"We do everything to prepare our minds before our body actually arrives for the first game on March 29. We prepare here... so we’re ready for everything."

Muzarabani, who finished the recent T20 World Cup as the joint second-highest wicket-taker with 13 scalps, provides a crucial boost to a pace attack currently missing domestic stars Harshit Rana and Akash Deep due to injury.

Nayar also expressed his excitement about working alongside Watson, urging the players to tap into his experience. KKR will travel to Mumbai to face the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29, marking the start of a season where a late Zimbabwean blessing could prove to be the difference-maker.
