As the Midlands State University (MSU) gears up for its much-anticipated Alumni Reunion and Business Expo, excitement is building among graduates eager to reconnect and engage in meaningful economic opportunities.

Scheduled for next Friday, at the Gweru campus, this event represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of alumni relations, transitioning from traditional gatherings to a vibrant marketplace designed to foster collaboration and growth.

According to Garikai Muchemwa, head of programming, awards and recognition for the Alumni board, this year’s expo is not just about nostalgia, but economic empowerment and strategic positioning.

“For decades, alumni engagement has been defined by fundraising calls and homecoming tailgates but the modern graduate wants more than nostalgia. They want economic opportunity,” Muchemwa said.

We are proud that we will be hosting our inaugural Alumni Reunion and Business Expo under the new board and this must-attend event presents a unique opportunity for all progressive alumni to network and also explore synergies in the work of business.”

With a degree in History and Development Studies from MSU, graduated in 2006, Muchemwa is passionate about enhancing the alumni experience and believes this year's event will reflect that vision.

“We are going all out in our quest to empower each other while reminiscing on the past experiences that laid a strong foundation to the doers and achievers that we are and aspire to become,” he said.

“The past is a good reference point and compass to the present and future and the goal is that we ride on that shared past to exchange ideas and share experiences towards sustainable growth.”

Muchemwa stressed the strategic importance of activating this community, noting why university alumni networks are currently among the most powerful professional assets available.

“Alumni ties come with built-in credibility shared training and shared standards which reduce friction in hiring, partnerships, and due diligence, meaning decisions and deals move faster,” he said.

“These high-trust networks foster an environment where alumni can confidently invest and collaborate because they know they share a common foundation.”

He added that this aligns with global trends towards convergence of ideas and they expect all progressive alumni to tap into this opportunity.

“Alumni platforms are convergence engines for ideas, collaboration, and capital,” Muchemwa said.

“Unlike broad, but shallow social media, these networks compound over decades, turning relationships into long-term leverage and market access.

“We are expecting to see all progressive alumni drawn from various sectors of the economy tapping into this noble idea so that we can chart a future that we will all be proud of.”

The Alumni Business Expo aims to shift perceptions and redefine the relationship between the university and its alumni.

“It’s time we stop viewing alumni solely as donors and start viewing them as business owners, investors, and supply chain partners,” Muchemwa said.

“By unlocking dormant business-to-business revenue and promoting internal procurement, the expo bridges gaps in student career outcomes and addresses the pressing talent crisis by connecting scaling alumni businesses with job-ready graduates.”

The event is not going to be another networking event; but a marketplace of shared purpose, designed to create repeated interactions and mutual value.

“Exhibiting is completely free. No booth fees, no hidden costs just you, your brand, and a room full of fellow graduates ready to buy, hire, and collaborate.

It surely can’t get better than this and we hope for a successful groundbreaking initiative that will birth other exciting ideas that add value to our membership,” Muchemwa said.

Proposer Mutswiri, Alumni board chairperson, also commended the university, the alumni board and all MSU graduates for this noble initiative.

“This is a welcome development in a world where networking is vital for the creation of opportunities and sustainability,” Mutswiri said.

“Our vision for the expo aligns with the broader goals of enhancing connections among alumni and such events are crucial for fostering economic growth and collaboration within the university community.”

Mutswiri also encouraged all alumni to take advantage of this opportunity especially given its design and objectives.

“Come to MSU’s Gweru campus, secure your booth, showcase your brand, and connect with your community,” he said.

“This is where reunion meets opportunity: reminisce under the barbecue setup at your alma mater, strike deals, and build the future with the people who share your foundation.”

As the alumni prepare to come together for this momentous event, the spirit of MSU remains strong.

The Alumni Reunion and Business Expo promises to be an enriching experience, blending the joy of reunion with the thrill of new possibilities.
