Zimbabwe’s hybrid conversation is getting louder — and Chery clearly intends to be part of it.
The Chinese automaker has introduced its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) family locally, a four-model range that blends turbo-petrol power with plug-in hybrid efficiency to suit everything from city commuting to long-distance touring.
The line-up includes the 7 CSH Plus, 7 CSH Ultra, 8 CSH Apex and range-topping 9 CSH Vanguard All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
The promise is straightforward: the flexibility of an internal combustion engine for long trips, combined with electrified driving that can reduce fuel consumption in everyday stop-start conditions.
In a market where fuel costs remain a major running expense, and where many drivers regularly cover intercity routes, Chery’s formula will catch attention.
What stands out is the way the CSH series is being positioned. This is not only an “eco” play. Chery is pushing a broader message: Strong range, comfort, modern convenience and ownership reassurance, while still aiming to keep costs reasonable.

In other words, the company is trying to offer a mix that is often hard to find, premium-style features and technology with the promise of “small bills” at the pumps.
Wider usage base
Rather than bring one hybrid and hope it fits everyone, Chery is spreading the offering across four distinct models. The 7 CSH Plus is the gateway option for day-to-day driving.
The 7 CSH Ultra keeps the same basic formula but adds polish and claims serious touring range. The 8 CSH Apex targets comfort-focused family buyers with extra charging support and cabin luxury.
The 9 CSH Vanguard AWD is the flagship, adding all-wheel drive and the most advanced tech package.
7 CSH Plus: the practical entry point
The 7 CSH Plus is aimed at drivers who want electrified efficiency without making ownership complicated. It pairs a 1,5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with hybrid technology, and Chery highlights a 3 kW mobile charging feature intended to help top up the battery when you are away from home.
That matters in a market where home charging is not always straightforward for every buyer and public infrastructure is still limited.
A flexible charging approach could make the hybrid concept feel more realistic for a wider group of motorists.
Inside, the 7 CSH Plus leans into everyday convenience.
Voice command control allows drivers to access navigation and multimedia functions with less distraction, and three driving modes help tailor the vehicle’s response to traffic conditions or open-road cruising.
It is positioned as the “do most things well” model-sensible, modern and family-friendly.
More touring confidence
The 7 CSH Ultra builds on the Plus by adding a more premium feel and additional comfort and technology.
Chery’s key claim here is up to 1 200km of total range on a full tank and charge, putting it squarely in long-distance territory.
For Zimbabwean motorists, that kind of touring confidence matters. Whether it is Harare–Bulawayo runs, trips to Mutare, or regular cross-border travel, the ability to cover big distances with fewer stops can be as valuable as fuel savings themselves.
The Ultra continues the family-first theme with flexible seating options, while aiming to deliver the extra refinement buyers increasingly expect in this segment.
The pitch is essentially: everything the Plus does, but with more comfort and a stronger premium flavour.
Comfort-led hybrid family travel
If the Ultra is the step up, the 8 CSH Apex is the comfort statement. It is designed for drivers who want a more luxurious cabin experience without abandoning efficiency.
It comes with a 7 kW home charging station, which signals a more deliberate plug-in lifestyle: plug in overnight, start the day with usable electric range, and let the petrol engine handle longer stretches.
Chery claims around 1 200km of range for the Apex as well, which makes it suitable for frequent intercity driving — especially for families who want fewer refuelling interruptions.
Where the Apex tries to separate itself is in cabin equipment.
It features heated and ventilated seats with a massage function, plus a heated steering wheel, features that are typically found in higher-end vehicles.
The Apex also seats seven passengers, keeping it firmly in the “big-family and road-trip” category.
Flagship range, traction and tech
At the top of the range is the 9 CSH Vanguard AWD, positioned as the most advanced and capable CSH model.
The headline addition is all-wheel drive, a feature that can be particularly useful on wet highways, rougher roads outside major cities, or mixed-surface travel.
Like the Apex, it is supplied with a 7 kW home charging station. Chery’s boldest claim is reserved for this flagship: up to 1 350km total range on a full charge and tank.
Real-world figures will always depend on speed, load, terrain and driving habits, but the message is clear — this model is built to go far.
The Vanguard also brings the widest spread of driver settings with six driving modes, intended to help tailor the vehicle’s behaviour to conditions and driving style.
There is also self-parking, aimed at reducing the stress of tight urban parking, while premium touches such as heated seats and a high-spec interior underline its flagship status.
Warranty, servicing peace of mind
Hybrid sceptics often focus on one question: “What happens if the battery fails?” Chery is attempting to answer that directly with a 10-year battery warranty, a headline figure designed to reassure buyers thinking long-term.
The ownership package also includes a first free service at 5 000km and service intervals of 10 000km thereafter.
For buyers comparing running costs, predictable servicing schedules and strong warranty coverage can carry as much weight as features like screens, cameras and drive modes.
Chery’s wider African strategy
Chery’s local hybrid push also fits into a broader continental expansion plan.
The company has pointed to its acquisition of the former Nissan plant in South Africa as part of its effort to strengthen supply and support in Africa.
For customers, the significance is less about corporate headlines and more about confidence: buyers want to know the brand will be around, parts will be available, and aftersales support will grow with the vehicle population.
The bottom line
Chery’s CSH series is a deliberate attempt to make hybrids feel mainstream in Zimbabwe: long range, lower fuel use, modern tech and real comfort, offered across four models to match different budgets and lifestyles.
If the claimed range figures translate well into everyday driving, and if the ownership support proves as solid as the warranty suggests, the CSH line-up could become a serious option for motorists, who want to reduce fuel spend without sacrificing space, performance or convenience.
