FEW vehicles have earned the kind of respect the Toyota Hilux commands on Zimbabwean roads.
From rural workloads to city errands, the Hilux has long been the dependable companion for both business and family life.
To mark over 50 years of this motoring legend, Toyota has introduced the Hilux Legend 55, a special edition that honours its heritage while refining the formula.
Every five years brings us a “Legend” version — we have seen the Legend 45, the Legend 50, and now, the 55.
I spent a week behind the wheel, testing the Legend 55 in diverse conditions — from the hustle of Harare’s CBD to the dusty, winding roads of Mvurwi — to see if it still lives up to its formidable reputation.
Styling: Rugged with purpose

Toyota did not reinvent the wheel here, but the Legend 55 looks every bit the special edition it claims to be. The glossy black detailing gives it a tougher, more premium stance.
Model specific touches — such as black mirror caps, door handles, grille and roll bar — combine with two tone 18 inch alloy wheels to create a commanding road presence.
Inside, subtle references to its “Legend” status include embossed “55” seat logos and floor mats, a black headliner, and added soft touch materials. It feels familiar but more refined, blending durability with understated sophistication.
Space, comfort
The Hilux cabin has matured over the years, and the Legend 55 continues that evolution. It is spacious, well organised, and full of practical touches.
The infotainment system is headlined by a responsive central touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional JBL audio setup delivers rich sound, and multiple USB A/USB C ports plus a wireless charger keep devices powered.
There is thoughtful storage too — from the coolable central console (a blessing in Zimbabwe’s heat) to multiple cubbies and cup holders. It strikes a fine balance between rugged utility and modern comfort.
Performance
Beneath the hood, the 2,8 litre GD 6 turbo diesel returns with its familiar 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque, paired to a smooth six speed automatic gearbox. It is a combo that favours dependability over drama.
Performance remains measured — 0–100 km/h in just under 11 seconds — but the effortless torque delivery makes towing and off road climbs simple. The Hilux is not about flashy acceleration; it is about reliable, confident motion, and the Legend 55 embodies that ethos.
The drive: Tested to the limit
My test drive included a run to my home village around the Ruwombwe mountains of Nyazura, where deep mud and steep terrain provided the perfect challenge. With a 1,7 tonne trailer in tow, the Hilux barely broke a sweat.
Even in wet, slippery conditions, composure and control remained unwavering. Fuel consumption rose modestly to around 14 L/100 km, understandable under the circumstances.
The firm suspension still handles bumps and ruts well, and stability remains among the best in the segment.
Fuel economy
In everyday use — school runs, office commutes, and highway stretches — I averaged between 8,9 L and 9,4 L/100km. Those figures are consistent with previous Hilux models and impressive for a double cab this capable.
With diesel costs constantly shifting that efficiency will sit well with Zimbabwean buyers.
Safety: Confidence on every drive
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 now features across the range, including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and pre collision braking. The standard safety net — ABS, stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags — rounds off the package.
The lockable central locking tailgate adds peace of mind in urban environments, a small but valuable touch.
Pricing and value
At roughly US$78 000 after import duties and dealer margins, the Hilux Legend 55 2.8 GD 6 6AT (2025) sits in firm premium bakkie territory.
It is far from inexpensive, but its proven reliability, strong resale value, and long-term durability make it a justifiable purchase for those seeking bulletproof dependability.
Verdict: The Legend lives on
After a week with the Hilux Legend 55, one thing is clear: Toyota has preserved the essence of what makes the Hilux beloved across generations. It is tough, capable, and reassuringly familiar — exactly what its loyal base expects.
Yes, the interior could use a more modern refresh, and the new 2026 Hilux will likely address that. But for now, the Legend 55 serves as a proud final chapter for this generation.
If you can secure one before stock runs out, you are buying a slice of history, machined for the realities of modern Zimbabwe.
Whether cruising down Samora Machel Avenue or slogging through Mashonaland mud, the Hilux Legend 55 remains unshaken in spirit and reputation.
Pros: Styling, reliability, towing stability, fuel efficiency
Cons: Slightly dated cabin, firm ride when unladen
