PROMOTED side Hardrock celebrated the grand opening of their new multi-million-dollar Chahwanda Stadium yesterday with a battling display, holding league champions Scottland to a goalless draw in a historic encounter.

The magnificent facility, constructed by Kwekwe gold magnate Shepherd Chahwanda and his business partner Walter Magaya, proved a worthy stage for its first-ever Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match.

The spectacular 15,000-seater stadium is arguably among the finest in the country and rivals some of the top venues in the Southern African region.

Hours before kick-off, fans from both camps converged on the precinct, eager to catch their first glimpse of the state-of-the-art interior. While the quality on the pitch occasionally struggled to match the grandeur of the surroundings, the occasion was a triumph for the home supporters who finally took their seats in a world-class facility.

Predictably, Hardrock took time to find their rhythm in the unfamiliar surroundings of the top flight.

Scottland dominated the early exchanges, though clear-cut opportunities remained elusive. The Musona brothers — Walter and Knowledge — both had good chances, while Tymon Machope failed to capitalise on a few early jitters from Hardrock goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga.

At the other end, the hosts showed flashes of danger, with Andrew Phiri looking the most likely to cause an upset.

The second half followed a familiar script, with Scottland retaining control. The champions nearly broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when Walter Musona’s point-blank header was brilliantly parried by Mateyaunga.

Hardrock immediately launched a counterattack, but Washington Navaya lacked the clinical touch, dragging a tame shot wide of the upright.

Soon after, Knowledge Musona had the goal at his mercy following a square ball from the left, but the veteran forward uncharacteristically skied his effort.

Despite late pot shots and end-to-end exchanges in the closing stages, a stalemate felt like the fairest reflection of the contest.

Hardrock coach Kelvin Kaindu admitted his side were at times outmatched by the champions’ experience.

“It was a well-balanced and contested game. Our opponents came strong; tactically they were a bit superior to us. From what we have been doing in training, as a coach I’m happy because I’ve seen the work translating onto the pitch. We looked good in terms of organisation,” said Kaindu.

“Maybe what we need to improve is our transition when in possession. That is where we were let down. In the final third we were losing possession. But in terms of team shape, I think we are happy.”

On the opposite bench, Scottland coach Norman Mapeza expressed satisfaction with his team’s creativity despite the lack of a finishing touch.
