NORTH End residents in Bulawayo are hoping to turn fashion, food and entertainment into a source of funding for improved security in the suburb, with proceeds from an upcoming community show earmarked for the construction of a police post.

The North End residents association (NERA) will host the Denim and urban weave show at Queens Sports Club Gardens on Saturday, with more than 800 people expected to attend.

The event will also give small businesses, food vendors, crafters and other entrepreneurs an opportunity to sell their products and attract new customers.

NERA chairman Rame Makonese said the event would combine business promotion with entertainment, while helping the community raise money for the proposed North End Police Post.

“This fundraiser initiative is mainly to raise funds for the construction of the North End Police Post,” Makonese said.

He said the show would also feature surprise performances by local artists, while food vendors would offer braai packs alongside other offerings.

The organisers are targeting a wide range of businesses, with stalls being allocated across six categories to ensure that the event caters for different interests.

Food is expected to be one of the major attractions, with the food and winter warmers section open to vendors selling local grills, hearty soups, kotas, pies, hot chocolate and braai packs.

The drinks and treats category will cater for vendors selling fresh juices, milkshakes and artisanal baked goods.

Fashion will remain central to the event, with the fashion, thrift and accessories section expected to feature denim, urban streetwear, winter clothing, bags and handmade jewellery.

The organisers are also creating space for local creatives and entrepreneurs through the crafts, art and home category, which will feature home décor, potted plants, natural skincare products and handmade crafts.

Beauty and wellness practitioners, community organisations and service providers are being invited to participate under the health, cause and services category.

Families will also have something to look forward to, with a dedicated Kids and Family section offering games, toys, face painting and other child-friendly activities.

Organisers said the aim was to create an event where residents could shop from local businesses, discover new products and services and enjoy entertainment, while at the same time supporting a project intended to improve security in the suburb.

For small businesses, participation has been kept relatively affordable.

Each booking comes with a 2m by 4m stall space, full-day security and marketing coverage, while power will be available on request.

Vendors will also have an opportunity to compete for the Best Vendor Display prize, adding a competitive element to the showcase.

Live DJ performances and surprise appearances by local artists will provide entertainment throughout the event, with organisers expecting the combination of business, food and entertainment to draw residents from North End and surrounding areas.

However, entrepreneurs interested in participating have been urged to register early, as the number of stalls in each category will be limited to maintain a balanced mix of businesses.
