Plumtree Town Council has received a major boost in its service delivery capacity after commissioning a fleet of equipment aimed at improving municipal operations and infrastructure development in the border town.

The equipment was commissioned at a ceremony presided over by Local Government and Public Works deputy minister, Albert Mavhunga, who said the development was part of government’s efforts to strengthen the capacity of local authorities.

“The provision of this equipment is a demonstration of government’s commitment to capacitating local authorities so that they can effectively deliver services to their communities,” said Mavhunga.

He said the second republic remained committed to ensuring that communities benefited from development through the devolution and decentralisation programme.

“The second republic remains committed to ensuring that citizens benefit from development through the devolution and decentralisation agenda,” he said.

The newly acquired equipment includes two tipper trucks, one five-tonne truck, five motorbikes, one water bowser, one fire tender, two single-cab trucks, one commuter omnibus, one truck load board, one iron roller and one grader.

The equipment is expected to significantly improve the council’s ability to provide essential services, including road maintenance, waste management, firefighting, water provision and the maintenance of public infrastructure.

Part of the fleet was procured using devolution funds allocated to the council under the government’s decentralisation programme, which seeks to empower local authorities with resources to implement development projects and improve service delivery.

The equipment would enhance operational efficiency and enable the local authority to respond quickly to service delivery challenges affecting residents.

The investment comes as Plumtree continues to grow as a strategic border town, increasing the need for improved infrastructure and efficient municipal services.

The commissioning follows a similar handover of service delivery equipment to Matobo Rural District Council last Friday, demonstrating Government’s continued commitment to strengthening local authorities across the country.

The new equipment is expected to play a key role in supporting development initiatives and improving the quality of services provided to residents.
