A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Insuza has been sentenced to an effective 29 months in prison following his conviction for unlawful entry and indecent assault.

Kwanele Moyo appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla, who convicted him after a full trial.

Moyo initially faced an attempted rape charge, which was dismissed by the courts.

He was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for unlawful entry, with four months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

On the indecent assault charge, he received a 12-month sentence, three months of which were suspended under similar conditions, leaving him with an effective 29 months in prison.

Prosecutor Tsungai Mutapi told the court that on April 2 this year, the complainant, whose identity has been withheld to protect her, was asleep alone at home when she heard footsteps outside the house.

“The accused struck a window with an unidentified object, breaking two panes and causing glass to scatter inside the bedroom,” Mutapi said.

He then entered the house through an unlocked door and confronted the complainant.

“A struggle reportedly ensued before the complainant managed to escape from the house while calling for help,” Mutapi said.

The complainant informed her husband about the incident whom she met a distance from the scene.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Moyo’s arrest.
