THE Hwange community is reeling from a second fatal road accident within 24 hours after a hit-and-run accident killed a man near Cross Dete, police local officials have said.
The latest incident follows a tragedy that occurred on Saturday morning in which eight Roman Catholic worshippers died when a kombi carrying 13 passengers plunged from Deka River bridge after striking concrete barriers. Five others survived.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the earlier crash, saying the victims were returning from night prayers at St John’s Makwa Mission when the accident occurred around 7am.
In the second incident, councillor Dube of ward 16 said a young man was killed about 6km from Cross Dete along the Kamativi Road in what appeared to be a hit-and-run accident.
“There is oil around the area; it seems the vehicle developed a breakdown after hitting this man in the early hours of the day,” Dube said.
He added that the vehicle believed to be involved was towed away before police attended the scene.
