MAMOMBE DETAINED FOR NOTHING

By Petronilla Mukamuri

Harare West Legislator, Joana Mamombe was held in detention by Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service (ZPCS) for mental health examinations that did not even happen.

Harare Magistrate Court, Magistrate Bianca Makwande heard that Mamombe had only attended one session instead of two while being held in remand prison where she had been committed by the court.

Makwande demanded to know why the State had failed to present Mamombe’s mental evaluation results before the court.

“According to the record before me, Mamombe only under went one examination at Chikurubi Maximum Prison,” said Makwande.

Prosecutor Whisper Mabhaudhi failed to give an explanation, saying ZPCS failed to give him any explanation on why Mamombe had not undergone examination.

“There was no explanation from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) on why the second test was not done,” said Mabhaudhi.

The magistrate ordered that she gets a second evaluation before the next remand date set for October 22.

Mamombe’s lawyer, Alec Muchadehama said his client freed by the High Court from the illegal imprisonment would be available for mental examination

Facing two charges one of violating lockdown regulations and another of faking her own abduction, Mamombe was committed to remand prison even after posting bail for mental evaluation.
