HIV can be transmitted from an HIV-positive mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, and or breastfeeding. Mother-to-child transmission is also known as vertical transmission and contributes to the majority of infections in children.
The world has embarked on a fast-track strategy to end AIDS by 2030. A number of measures are being taken to ensure that this target is achieved. Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV has proved to be one of the dependable vehicles which will make it possible for Zimbabwe to have an HIV-free generation.

In an interview with Heart and Soul radio recently, NAC Chief Executive, Dr Bernard Madzima confirmed that couples who have one of the partners, or both of them being HIV positive can have children that are HIV negative. “Once people get to know their status and one or both of them are HIV positive, there are processes that they must follow. It is important that people get tested for HIV, know their status and if they are HIV positive they start taking antiretroviral therapy to suppress the viral load before getting pregnant,” he said.
