Football giant and legend ‘mastermind’ George Shaya has died.
Shaya passed on this morning at his Glen Norah A home at the age of 77 after a long battle with diabetes. The battle with diabetes started back in 2019, getting to the point where he had to have his legs amputated.
Shaya started his career at the age of 16 at St Paul’s in Murehwe before moving to Dynamos. Shaya was selected for the Rhodesian world cup team which played three qualifying rounds against Australia and Mozambique in 1969. After two drawn games, Rhodesia lost the third and that was the last chance George had of furthering an international soccer career.
He was a former Dynamos football player where he was considered one of the finest players of all time. During the 1960s and 1970s, he also played for the Rhodesian national team where he was named a soccer star of the year.
