VISITING CAPS United breathed new life into their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Manica Diamonds at Sakubva Stadium on Saturday, further deepening the hosts' relegation worries.
Goals from Chawanangwa Kaonga and Kope Mugalu secured all three points for the Green Machine and handed coach Takesure Chiragwi a much-needed first victory after a frustrating six-match winless run.
The match got off to an exciting start, with both teams searching for an early breakthrough.
Manica Diamonds almost opened the scoring in the 11th minute when new signing Kelvin Bingala connected well with captain Lawrence Masibera's trademark long throw-in, but his header was brilliantly tipped away by veteran CAPS United goalkeeper Washington Arubi.
The hosts squandered another golden opportunity in the 26th minute when Bingala and Liberty Manzunzu failed to convert Philip Kaseke's inviting cross from the left flank.
CAPS United capitalised on the missed chances in the 31st minute after Masibera fouled Kaonga just outside the penalty area.
Man of the match, Kaonga stepped up and curled a superb free-kick over the wall and beyond goalkeeper Godfrey Chitsumba, sending the travelling Green Machine supporters into wild celebrations.
The visitors controlled much of the remainder of the first half and deservedly carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
CAPS United continued to threaten after the restart, while Manica Diamonds searched desperately for an equaliser.
In the 58th minute, Mugale doubled the visitors' advantage with a spectacular volley after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty box, leaving Chitsumba with no chance as the ball crashed into the roof of the net.
Manica Diamonds responded with renewed urgency, and in the 62nd minute Arubi produced another outstanding save, acrobatically denying Devine Zulu's powerful header.
The Gem Boys dominated possession in the closing stages but found Arubi in inspired form as he pulled off a series of crucial saves to preserve his clean sheet.
The defeat leaves Manica Diamonds further entrenched in the relegation battle, while CAPS United move forward with renewed confidence.
A delighted Chiragwi praised his team's discipline and efficiency after the final whistle.
"It was a very good match. It is good to win away from home. It was a tactical game and I am happy that we scored our chances," he said.
"It is a great relief after going for many matches without a win. We hope to maintain the winning streak and collect more points in as many games."
Manica Diamonds coach Hebert Maruwa blamed his side's wastefulness in front of goal.
"We missed a lot of chances and we could have easily won that game. The reality of football is that if you don't score, you will be punished. This is exactly what happened," he said.
Despite the setback, Maruwa remained optimistic about his team's progress.
"Despite this loss, I can see that we are improving in terms of technique. Remember, we are still rebuilding and I am seeing great potential," he said.
