CBZ Bank emerged as the overall team winners of the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe (IOBZ) Interbank Golf Tournament, which took place on Friday at Royal Harare Golf Club.

The tournament officially kicked off the highly anticipated 2026 Interbank Games, setting a high standard of competition for the rest of the sporting showcase.

Defending champions FBC Bank secured second place in the team standings, while TN Cybertech Bank rounded out the top three.

CBZ’s victory was heavily propelled by an outstanding performance from Jean Mhlanga, who emerged as the overall individual winner of the tournament with an impressive 41 points.

It was a momentous night for Mhlanga, who also walked away with the accolade for the best lady golfer.

Gibson Sibanda claimed second place individually with 39 points.

The battle for third place was fiercely contested, with Tawanda Mumbengegwi ultimately taking the spot after a count-in.

Mumbengegwi finished on 37 points, level with Alufaneti Mavhunga and Arthur Nyazika, who also put up stellar performances to manage the same tally.

In one of the most lighthearted highlights of the evening, the 'Most Golf' award was presented to Mabasa Mwakutuya.

Far from discouraged, Mwakutuya was thrilled with the recognition, jokingly noting that he had only started playing golf the previous week.

He remarked that this was the shortest time it had ever taken him to win an award for any new skill he had attempted in his life.

Speaking at the awards dinner, IOBZ chairman Tapera Mushoriwa praised the participants and emphasized the deep connection between the sport of golf and the banking profession.

"It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2026 Inter-Bank Golf Awards Dinner. Tonight, we celebrate more than a successful day on this course. We celebrate values that make both golf and banking enduring professions: discipline, integrity, patience, and excellence," Mushoriwa said.

"Golf teaches us that success is rarely about one exceptional shot. It is about consistency, sound judgment, recovery (especially in the bunker!), and composure over every other hole.

“Those are the very qualities our profession demands every day as we build trust, serve our customers, and contribute to Zimbabwe's economic development."

Mushoriwa also highlighted the importance of camaraderie in an era of rapid technological shift.

"As our industry continues to evolve through digital transformation and innovation, one thing remains unchanged: banking is still built on relationships.

Events such as these remind us that while we represent different institutions, we are united by a shared responsibility: which is to uphold professionalism, strengthen our industry, and inspire the next generation of leaders.

"That is why the Inter-Bank Games are so important. They bring us together beyond the workplaces, creating opportunities to build friendships, to encourage teamwork, and reinforce the spirit of healthy competition that ultimately benefits our entire sector."

The chairman extended his gratitude to the tournament's corporate partners—Minerva Risk Advisors, First Mutual, and Solution Centre—as well as the Inter-Bank Games Organising Committee, led by Godfrey Marongwe, the IOBZ and BAZ secretariats, and the hosts, Royal Harare Golf Club.

"As we officially begin the 2026 Inter-Bank Games, may today's tournament set the standard for the tournament ahead: one of excellence and mutual respect," Mushoriwa concluded.

"May we continue to compete with passion, collaborate with purpose, lead with integrity, always remembering that the strength of our banking sector lies not only in the institutions that we represent, but in the values that we collectively uphold as an industry."

The golf tournament served as the curtain-raiser for the broader 2026 Interbank Games. The remaining sports disciplines are scheduled to take place next weekend, July 11 and 12, at the University of Zimbabwe.

An expansive lineup of financial institutions participated in the golf opener, including NMB Bank, Stanbic Bank, Ecobank, POSB, the central bank regulator RBZ, First Capital Bank, BancABC, NBS, CABS, AFC, Nedbank, and ZB Bank.

These institutions will lock horns once again next weekend across a diverse sports program featuring soccer, basketball, volleyball, netball, lawn tennis, squash, table tennis, pool, chess, darts, tug of war, and both track and road athletics.
