HIGHLANDERS finally returned to training on Friday after a three-day industrial action over unpaid salaries and winning bonuses, providing a timely boost ahead of today's blockbuster Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash against Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium.
The players had downed tools earlier this week demanding payment of their May salaries and outstanding winning bonuses, throwing preparations for Zimbabwe's biggest football fixture into turmoil.
However, the squad resumed training under coach Benjani Mwaruwari on Friday afternoon after reaching a compromise with the technical team, with a final light session scheduled yesterday before the derby.
"They trained at BF in the afternoon yesterday (Friday) after refusing to train at White City. I am sure they will just have a walk-through today (yesterday) before the game," a source told NewsDay Sport.
Mwaruwari welcomed the players' return but admitted the disruption had taken its toll.
"They trained on Friday afternoon but two days is not enough. It will now take character and their fighting spirit. The response was great. I admire the boys and when it's time to work they really work hard and put everything aside. They give their all and, as a coach, I have hope," he said.
Despite the off-field distractions, Bosso will draw confidence from a strong recent run at Barbourfields, where they have beaten Bulawayo Chiefs, Agama and GreenFuel in their last five league matches.
Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe dismissed suggestions that Highlanders' troubles could give his side an advantage, describing them as possible mind games.
"The boys are ready to go. Everyone is working hard and wants to be part of this game. We are going to come up with a very strong squad to face Highlanders," he said.
With pride, bragging rights and crucial league points at stake, another fiercely contested chapter of the country's biggest football rivalry awaits at a packed Barbourfields Stadium this afternoon.
