A masterclass in patience and tactical dominance saw the Zimbabwe women's national football team, the Mighty Warriors, book their place in the finals of the Zambia Four Nations tournament in Ndola yesterday.
The Warriors produced a vintage second-half performance to overcome a stubborn, low-blocking Lesotho side with a commanding 3-1 victory. The win sets up a mouthwatering, high-stakes final against the hosts, Zambia, this coming Tuesday.
Zimbabwe started the match with intent and found the breakthrough in the 30th minute when veteran midfielder Emmaculate Msipa found the back of the net.
However, the joy was short-lived. Lesotho, who proved to be fierce competitors in the first half, struck back just seven minutes later through Tebello Lekote, sending both teams into the interval deadlocked at 1-1.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to Zimbabwe.
Coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda’s tactical adjustments paid off as the Mighty Warriors began to systematically dismantle Lesotho's defensive fortress.
The breakthrough came in the 68th minute courtesy of a brilliant strike from Ethel Chinyerere. With momentum firmly on their side, Zimbabwe sealed the victory in the 85th minute when lethal forward Rutendo Makore fired home the third, putting the game well out of Lesotho's reach.
Speaking after the match, a delighted Mighty Warriors coach, Sithethelelwe Sibanda, praised her team's composure and ability to adapt to Lesotho's defensive tactics.
"It was a good game. I am happy especially with the ball rotation from the team," Sibanda said. "At the end of the day, what we wanted to achieve was for the players to have the confidence to rotate the ball, and they did that very well. Maybe our biggest letdown was the finishing; we didn't manage to take the chances that we created."
Sibanda also highlighted the halftime adjustments that allowed her team to break the deadlock in the second stanza.
"In the second half, after going to the break level at 1-1, we managed to break the well-organized Lesotho defense. They were playing a really low block which we struggled to penetrate at times. We pressed them very well and in the end, we managed to score two more goals."
The Mighty Warriors will now face a blockbuster regional Derby against Zambia on Tuesday.
The hosts had to dig deep in their semi-final clash against Kenya. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time—where Kenya's Marion Serenge scored a late equalizer to cancel out Prisca Chilufya's early opener—the match was decided by a tense penalty shootout.
Zambia showed nerves of steel, converting all their spot-kicks via Irene Lungu, Racheal Kundananji, Saliyah Mwanza, and Ochumba Oseke to triumph 4-1 on penalties.
With both teams high on confidence, Tuesday’s final promises to be an absolute thriller in Ndola. Zimbabwe will be hunting for silverware, while Zambia will have the backing of a passionate home crowd.
