Econet Wireless Zimbabwe says preparations for the 2026 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon are well underway, with the stage set for yet another spectacular celebration of sport, wellness, tourism and Zimbabwean hospitality.
With just a month to go before the race takes place in the scenic, international destination and resort town of Victoria Falls on July 5, 2026, more than 5 000 runners from over 40 countries have already confirmed their participation at what has become Africa's most iconic and unique marathon events.
Now a fixture on the region’s sporting and tourism calendar – since 2006 – the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon has evolved into a globally recognised event that attracts elite marathon athletes, wellness enthusiasts and adventure seeker alike, while showcasing Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe to an international audience.
Econet Wireless, the event's headline sponsor, says extensive preparations are underway – in collaboration with race organisers, local authorities, travel and tourism stakeholders and emergency services – to ensure a great experience for participants and visitors to the event.
Econet group CEO Douglas Mboweni said the marathon had grown far beyond a sporting competition, becoming an important platform for promoting Zimbabwe, driving tourism and stimulating economic activity.
"The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon has earned a reputation as one of Africa's most distinctive sporting events, combining world-class competition with one of the most spectacular natural wonders anywhere in the world," said Mboweni.
"Every year, the event shines an international spotlight on Zimbabwe and demonstrates our ability to host major global events, while showcasing the beauty, warmth and hospitality of our people."
Mboweni said the marathon continues to generate significant benefits for the local economy through increased visitor arrivals, capacity hotel occupancy, transport services and business activity, while also encouraging healthy lifestyles and community participation.
One of the marathon's defining features remains its unique route, which offers runners an experience unlike any other on the continent.
Participants cross the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, taking in breathtaking views of the Victoria Falls Gorge and surrounding landscape, and running through sections of the National Park, experiencing an unforgettable blend of athletic achievement and natural wonder.
Econet deputy CEO Roy Chimanikire said the company was working closely with organizers and the relevant authorities to ensure another smooth and successful event.
"Once again we are to looking forward to welcoming runners and visitors from across country, the region and the rest of the world to Victoria Falls,” Chimanikire said.
“Months of planning and coordination goes into the preparations, and we are confident that this year's marathon participants will have an exceptionally enjoyable experience – both on and off the race course."
He reiterated that the marathon had become one of Zimbabwe's most important annual events, helping to strengthen the country's reputation as a unique and premier sporting and tourist destination.
Now in its 18th year, athletes participating at this year’s marathon will compete in a range of race categories, including the full marathon (42.2km), the half marathon (21.1km), a 10.5km relay race, races for specially abled athletes, and the popular family Fun Run – which attracts participants of all ages and fitness levels.
