The government on Friday commissioned the Gandavaroyi solar mini grid project in Gokwe, a development that has addressed power challenges in the area.
The 96kw solar plant was installed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and is set to benefit two schools, a business centre, a clinic, a campfire hall and 20 homesteads.
Addressing thousands of villagers during the commissioning of the project, Energy and Power Development minister, July Moyo, said government will continue rolling out renewable energy sources across the country.
"We are encouraged by the significant progress being recorded across the country,” Moyo said.
“Similar off-grid solar projects have already been commissioned in Hakatwa in Manicaland, Sotiso in Kutu, Chitulipasi in Matabeleland South, Kamombe in Makonde and Chiwore in Uzumba Maramba-Pfungwe area, among many others.
"This demonstrates that the Government is implementing an inclusive national programme to ensure that no community is left behind in accessing modern energy services.
“The rollout of these projects will continue until every deserving community benefits from sustainable electricity."
REA board chairperson, Cecilia Chitiyo said REA is moving to ensure that every child learns in an electrified school.
"Here in Midlands Province, REA is targeting to provide energy to 161 primary schools, 35 secondary schools as well as one clinic by December 2026," Chitiyo said.
"A total of 128 primary schools and 32 secondary schools will be electrified through grid electricity, while an additional 33 primary schools, three secondary schools and one clinic will benefit from solar energy.
“These interventions demonstrate the government's commitment to ensuring that every child learns in an electrified school and every rural community has access to modern energy services."
The government has pledged to accelerate the rural electrification programme with more rural institutions set to be electrified before year end.
