A Hurungwe man has been sentenced to an effective 18 months in prison after being found cultivating ten dagga plants.

Lameck Chareka (43), of Mubairachani village under Chief Chundu, was arrested on March 15, 2026, following a tip-off.

Police detectives discovered ten dagga plants, each standing 1.8 meters tall, in his garden.

The plants were later weighed at Zimpost Karoi, yielding 11.70 kilograms.

Chareka was charged with unlawful cultivation of dagga under section 196(1)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Magistrate Edwin Marecha imposed a two-year jail term, suspending six months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

They will serve 18 months in jail.

The dagga was forfeited to the state.
