A SEND-OFF ceremony for the late Warriors defender Charles Yohane will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa today ahead of his body’s repatriation for burial in the country this week.

Yohane, who was part of the Warriors’ squad for their debut appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004, was shot dead in a carjacking incident last Saturday in South Africa where he was based.

Yohane’s body was discovered in Soweto on Monday.

The former Zimbabwe international had been working as a youth development coach and driver for e-hailing service Bolt after his retirement.

The late Warriors star’s teammate Edelbert Dinha revealed that a memorial service will be held at AFM Church Kempton Park in Johannesburg today.

A decision on the repatriation of his body to Zimbabwe for burial is expected to be announced by Yohane’s family tomorrow.

“Unfortunately we don’t have the full programme for the memorial service yet, but it will be held tomorrow (today) at AFM Kempton Park at 1600 (hours). As for repatriation, we will only know on Monday,” he said.

Meanwhile, former South Africa international Roger De Sá has paid an emotional tribute to his former teammate Yohane.

De Sá, who is now the assistant coach of the Egyptian national team, played alongside Yohane during their spell at the now defunct South African top-flight outfit, Bidvest Wits.

“It’s terrible, hey. Can you believe, what’s happening in our country,” De Sá was quoted by the South African football website KickOff.

“I played with Charlie, then I coached him and then recruited him as one of my coaches. I had my full football experience with him from playing together to coaching.

“I made him the coach of the youth team together with Ashley Makhanya.

“We remained friends after that. We didn’t speak to each other often, as we never had the opportunity to catch up and have many chats.

De Sá said Yohane was a very gifted player during his playing days.

“As a player he was fantastic. He played left-back and I think during one season he was our top goalscorer,” he said.

“He took free-kicks and penalties but also scored so many goals from left-back. He was a really, really good player.

“Importantly, he was also a really nice guy who was easy going. This is really, really sad what has happened to him. He was an infectious character where everyone liked him.”
