THE new rivalry in Zimbabwean football, the high-stakes Harare Derby between league champions Scottland and the nation’s most successful club, Dynamos, at Rufaro yesterday, lived up to its billing in terms of atmosphere, but ultimately failed to produce the decisive spark on the scoreboard.

In a midweek encounter that saw a massive crowd descend upon the capital, the two giants played out a gripping 0-0 draw that kept both teams’ unbeaten records intact.

For Dynamos, the point was a significant statement.

Entering the day in fourth place, the draw moved them into third with 15 points from eight matches, boasting a superior goal difference over Ngezi Platinum Stars.

For Scottland, the result was more bittersweet; they remain in fifth place with 14 points, having desperately needed a win to close the gap on the league leaders.

Reflecting on the tactical battle, Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe praised his side’s defensive resilience despite their inability to find the net.

“I think we played according to our game plan. I thought maybe we were supposed to get a goal through those transitions of counter-attacks,” Mangombe said.

“But it was quite unfortunate that the opponents were spot on and they also really played very well from the back.

“Their gradual build-up was perfect. That point is very positive for us and it’s good because our first half was very well drilled.

“Our second half, maybe it was because of tiredness, and we decided to make some substitutes, which I thought didn’t give much value.

“We are going to address those situations so that when we make a substitution, it has an impact on the team play.”

On the opposite bench, Scottland gaffer Norman Mapeza felt his side did enough to snatch all three points, particularly in a dominant second-half display.

“Look, it was a good game of football,” he noted.

“I think in the first 10 minutes of the game, Dynamos were in control of everything. But in the last 20 minutes of the first half, we were much better.

“In the second half, I think we were in control of everything. We pushed. Still, I don’t know whether that was offside [Billiat’s goal], I’m not sure.

“But look, the guys played so well today. Like I always say, those half-chances — it could have been a different story.”

The contest began with a frantic energy typical of a derby.

DeMbare had the first real effort on goal when Wisdom Mutasa rose highest to meet an inviting Abel Gwatidzo cross from the left.

His downward header was well-directed, but lacked the power to trouble Nelson Chadya.

Scottland responded with intent, and moments later, the woodwork was rattling.

Zimbabwean legend Knowledge Musona stood over a dangerous free-kick and unleashed a curling effort that beat the wall, but crashed against the frame of the goal, leaving the Dynamos faithful breathing a collective sigh of relief.

It was a tense, physical game as Dynamos looked to disrupt Scottland’s trademark free-flowing football with a rugged approach.

However, Scottland looked dangerous each time they surged forward.

Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda Makoni almost gifted the hosts a goal after passing the ball to the wrong man, but he recovered brilliantly to deny Tymon Machope in a one-on-one situation.

The second half saw the hosts take a firmer grip on proceedings.

Knowledge had two further free-kick opportunities to break the deadlock, but the Smiling Assassin could not find his usual clinical edge on either occasion.

Seeking a breakthrough, Mapeza introduced Khama Billiat in the 57th minute.

The move almost paid dividend with 13 minutes left on the clock when Billiat thought he had broken the deadlock, slotting home to ignite the home fans.

However, the celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside — a decision that remained the main talking point of the afternoon.

In other matches, it was a good day in office for Benjani Mwaruwari when his side Highlanders overpowered Chicken Inn by three goals to one at Barbourfields.

Elsewhere at Nyamhunga, ZPC Kariba drew 1-1 with Bulawayo Chiefs.
