BY AGATHA CHUMA WINTER is over and summer is definitely upon us, meaning that as the southern hemisphere sun hovers overhead one needs to think a lot in terms of fashion and skincare.

Many people, however, are not even aware that seasons determine fashion trends.

In interviews with NewsDay Life & Style, fashion designers and make-up artists shared tips on ideal summer season fashion and make-up to look good, simple and smart.

Fashion designer Ruby Cherly Zinyawu who has been in the industry for the past 13 years said simple, trendy and comfortable clothing was exciting for summer.

“As a designer and person who closely follows fashion trends, I would advise people to wear comfortable, fun and trendy clothing just to be outstanding, but without spending much. Multi-wear Palazzo pants that are in chiffon design with a lighter material are exciting pieces in demand this season and I would advise someone to opt for those pants because they are stylish, trendy and comfortable all in one.

“For those who love skirts, midi pleated and ruby skirts are of course an essential type of clothing that is perfect for summer. They go very well with sneakers or gladiators and are perfect for casual or office wear,” she said.

Every season has its appropriate colour and it is commonly said that white is the most suitable colour for summer temperatures because it keeps the body cool, unlike black which tends to absorb heat. Zinyawu totally agrees.

“White is the colour that goes hand-in-hand with summer and other bright colours, but I would advise one to consider their skin tone before choosing a colour to wear. Avoid black during summer because obviously it is not the best colour unless maybe if it is a light material piece but still a pop of something colourful — maybe an accessory is essential to bring life to it since black is dull and not really a happy colour compared to others.

“A lot of people would say black fits everywhere, but I think it needs a touch, maybe between the face and neckline, like a chunky colourful necklace, I think that will be better. I am one of those people who don’t like to show a lot of skin which other designers consider “sexy”. I just believe in wearing a piece in which you feel confident and avoids disappointing comments because clothing speaks volumes,” she added.

Designer Tania Madimutsa, who majors in beading said: “Cotton dresses, which are flared, are a must for a perfect summer wear unlike silk ones. They absorb sweat, something unavoidable on a hot day. Safari shorts are also fashionable. In everything that people wear, a touch of white colour is an essential need during summer.”

Before going out, make-up is essential, especially among ladies. It is often labelled as a cosmetic item that is used to prettify or add colour to one’s face, and it is true, one needs to look presentable from the clothing to the looks. Make-up artists are of the view that every season comes with its own different temperatures which require different shades of make-up.

Ruvimbo “Ruege” Mutoko, who finds joy in beautifying women said: “It is not always advisable to opt for the same look in both summer and winter months. For your summer make-up look, always keep the colours light and avoid heavy cosmetics like foundation. The smoky eye look is not a great idea for summer because the dark shades can run or smudge easily. In fact, in summer months you can do away with the eyeliner and opt for a shimmer shadow instead.

“Touch up your face with a light powder to stave off the greasy look that may appear after a few hours outside. Using eye shadow with a light shimmer gives your eyes a fresh, dewy look, eliminating signs of tiredness. Your lips need a swipe of gloss. Light, punchy shades keep you looking fresh and full of life. If you use a lip balm, then pick one with tint so that it can double as your lip colour. If you want to add lipstick, pick soft shades like nude beige, or rosy tints. Avoid cherry reds or bright pinks for quick make-up.”
