ZIMBABWE’S most notorious nine-member armed robbery gang was yesterday convicted by Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko and now awaits sentence.

The nine — Musa Taj Abdul, Liberty Mupamhanga, Prince Makodza, Godfrey Mupamhanga, Charles Lundu, Rudolph Kanhanga, Innocent Jairos, Tapiwa Mangoma and Carrington Marasha — has been linked to a spate of robberies recorded in most parts of the country.

The matter was postponed to today for continuation of mitigation before sentencing.

In an unrelated matter, magistrate Letwin Rwodzi yesterday dismissed an application by controversial property developer Geogios Katsimberis to have his matter referred to the Constitutional Court, saying his application lacked merit for it to be referred to the apex court.

Katsimberis is being charged with duping Pokugara Properties (Pvt) Limited of close to US$1 million in a joint venture to build cluster houses in Harare’s leafy Borrowdale suburb.

Through his lawyer, Tendai Biti, Katsimberis submitted that he could not be an accused and at the same time be a witness in a case with the same facts.

Biti submitted that he intended to file an application against the dismissal of his application for referral of the matter to the Constitutional Court.

The matter was remanded to Friday this week.
