BY TENDAI SAUTA BUBBLING with joy for being crowned 2022 second princess, Midlands-based development practitioner Yolanda Rumbidzai Gwabuya has vowed to leave no one behind in raising awareness on the plight of people with albinism (PWA).

NewsDay Life & Style caught up with Gwabuya soon after grabbing the Miss Albinism second princess  Zimbabwe gong at a colourful Mr and Miss Albinism held at Harare’s Longchen Plaza. Miss Albinism Zimbabwe queen Angela Dube, first princess Brenda Mlanga, Mr Albinism Zimbabwe King Lordwin Rimire, first prince Nthandoyenkosi Mnkandla and Second Prince Don kuswatuka were also crowned at the event.

Gwabuya believes, resources permitting, she is geared to set a new normal which is characterised by unrelenting love, care and support for people with albinism (PWA).

“It was a really life-changing experience for me as it was my first time to take part in an event of this magnitude which promotes the empowerment of people with albinism. I want to work hard in teaching and raising awareness on albinism and fighting stigma and discrimination.

“I have a hard task ahead to send the message that people with albinism are equal to anybody else and they need to be empowered to become the best versions of themselves,” she said.

Association of Disabled and Elderly persons in Zimbabwe co-ordinator, Primrose Nyangoni was super excited that Gwabuya, who hails from her province, had been crowned second princess.

“I am running out of words and I appreciate with a thankful heart that when one sows seeds expects them to germinate, grow and blossom to a yieldable crop. Yolanda is our amazing rare species from the Great Dyke and this gives us a lot of motivation as we work on albinism awareness,” she said.

“This is the beginning of our long journey in the fight against discrimination and stigma on people with albinism. We wish to encourage all the people in Zvishavane to take this as a gift in our efforts to establish relevant infrastructure for people with albinism.”
