A 40-year-old man, Collin Mupanduki, is in police custody following a violent robbery in Beitbridge involving the theft of cash and traditional delicacies.
Mupanduki was arrested in connection with the heist at a residence in the New Alpha suburb on July 1. During the robbery, he allegedly made off with R 1 600 in cash and five large bags of Mopani worms, known locally as amacimbi or madora.
The suspect was eventually apprehended by authorities while he was reportedly attempting to find buyers for the stolen delicacies.
Upon his arrest, police recovered the five bags of Mopani worms along with a cache of weapons, including an axe, a knife, and several machetes, which are believed to have been used during the commission of the crime. National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest and praised the local community for their vigilance, which was instrumental in the suspect's swift capture.
Mupanduki is scheduled to appear in court shortly to face formal robbery charges. The recovered weapons and stolen goods will be presented as evidence during his trial.
