About 59.9 kilometres of the rehabilitated Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway has now been opened to traffic.
The road, which links Bulawayo to the country’s premier tourism destination, Victoria Falls, is a vital route for domestic and international travellers, freight transporters and local communities.
Upgrading the highway is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel times and boost economic activity along the corridor. Matabeleland North provincial roads engineer, Xolani Ncube, said the progress achieved so far showed commitment to enhancing transport infrastructure and improving connectivity across the region.
“Works are progressing steadily, and we have now opened 59.9 kilometres to traffic,
The project remains focused on delivering a safer and more efficient road network that supports tourism, trade and regional integration,” Ncube said.
He noted that contractors continue to work on various sections of the road, with construction activities including road widening, surfacing and the installation of safety features designed to improve the driving experience. Once completed, the improved highway is expected to facilitate the smoother movement of goods and people while supporting the growth of tourism and commerce in Matabeleland North and beyond.
